ZWIC PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY ORGANIZATION
In March 2016, the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) published the Plastic Waste Management Rules (PWM), 2016 with the objective of plastic waste minimization in the country. Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) is the central tenet of the PWM Rules, 2016. EPR is a globally established and accepted principle of environmental policy. It has been successfully implemented in many countries, including the EU since late 1980s. Indian policymakers have now legislated EPR as a tool for waste management to address plastic waste management in India.
EPR authorization is mandatory and must be obtained by all the producers and brand owners. EPR stipulates that producer companies that design and use plastic packaging are accountable for managing a product through its life cycle. The producers and brand owners are required to register themselves with a full description of their EPR strategy for achieving recycling targets. The strategy requires details of EPR models that the company chooses for achieving waste reduction targets.
ZWCI is among India’s top most Producer Responsibility Organization. We assist our members in fulfilling EPR compliance requirements by providing reliable, clear, and decisive solutions.
EPR
EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY
An environmental policy approach in which a producer’s responsibility for a product is extended to the post-consumer stage of a product’s life cycle
Extended Producer Responsibility is a concept where manufacturers and importers of products should bear a significant degree of responsibility for the environmental impacts of their products throughout the product life-cycle, including upstream impacts inherent in the selection of materials for the products, impacts from manufacturers’ production process itself, and downstream impacts from the use and disposal of the products. Producers accept their responsibility when designing their products to minimize life-cycle environmental impacts, and when accepting legal, physical or socio-economic responsibility for environmental impacts that cannot be eliminated by design.
PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT RULES 2016 BY GOI
On the direction of National Green Tribunal (NGT), Ministry of Environment and Forests has finalized the Plastic Waste Management (“PWM”) Rules 2016, which has come out with stringent norms for Extended Producer Liability (EPR), and includes roadmap as well as penalty structures on producers, generators and Brand owners.
